2006 Holden Scramble
The SSGA held its annual Holden Scramble at Woolooware GC on the 18th of September. The SSGA had its largest field to date. A gorgeous spring day greeted the players for a 7.30am shot gun start. Players travelled from as far as Oberon GC to compete in the event.

The winning team on the day was the young junior team of Brad Thompson (7), Steve Behringer (17) and Tristan Berrett (12) with a great nett score of 54, in second place was Jackie Timbrell (38), John Ticehurst (7) and Zoe Ticehurst (31) with a nett score of 54 2/6, in third place was the defending champions from last year of Mark Simpson (19), David Puckeridge (13) and Adrian Adelerhof (12) with a nett score of 55 2/3.

Also on the day, the SSGA ran a raffle with the Money raised going to the SSGA's junior program.

We would like to thank our supporters including sponsors and Holden, Jobson's, Srixon, Woolooware Golf Club, Golf Australia, The Tradies and The Ridge Golf Driving Range for making the day a success.

Super Sharks Represent Australia
On the 27th of August our Super Sharks Team represented Australia in the Australia Japan Junior Golf Challenge.

The challenge was an official event of the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange and many juniors and their families traveled from Japan for the occasion. Special guests on the day included Mr Kawada and Mr Manabe from the Consulate of Japan in Sydney; Mr Chiba from PGA Japan and Bill Dunk, multiple winner of the Australian PGA Championship as well as representatives from Japan Airlines and Yamaha.

The Super Sharks did us proud with them all playing well and shooting very respectable nett scores. The only down side was that Cole Halls had to withdraw with a back injury
(it must be added that Cole has become a prolific winner at Kareela GC of late, reducing his handicap from 27 to 17 in 2 months).

Following are the scores from the day Matthew Osborne 69, Lee Ming 70, Jackie Timbrell 72, Oliver Duncan 72. At the end of the day, it was a close finish as the top five nett scores from each country were tallied to determine the team winner. Congratulations to the Australian juniors who took home the gold medal with a total of 334, just one better than the Japanese juniors on 335.

Schweppes Shoot Out
The Annual Schweppes Shootout was staged on the 16th of September at Kareela GC. A total of 40 players competed in the event and it was a huge success. With a trip to Queensland at stake the juniors were playing for keeps, the closeness of the scores after the nine holes was exciting.

The winner of the day was young female golfer Zoe Ticehurst, who had an impressive score of nett 25, count back winner into second place was Zoe's great mate in Jackie Timbrell with a nett score of 26, in third position to make it a girls day out was Emma Orgovanyi.

The scratch winner was Lee Ming who had an impressive 3 over par, his card included a triple bogey which meant he played the other 8 holes in Par. Lee will now go into the draw to win a trip to QLD. So hopefully Lee will join Zoe on a trip of a lifetime.

Winner: Zoe Ticehurst
Runner Up: Jackie Timbrell
Scratch Winner: Lee Ming

Angus Ward - Hole in 1 at Cadets

It was a thrilling moment in golf for young Angus Ward when he approached the uphill 18th hole at Kareela GC.

Angus was already having a good day but made it all the sweeter when he holed out for a 1. Using a bright pink golf ball he smoothly hit the ball up towards the pin where Head Coach Kurt was looking on.

Kurt let out an almighty roar, that had heads turning. Angus's father Tony, looked up and said "that didn't go in did it". It surely did and young Angus sprinted up to find his ball in the hole.

Angus also won the 9 hole event with a nett score of 20. Great effort Angus.

Golf Practice Drill of the Month

Playing a shot from the opposite side

Often while playing we will get ourselves in a position out on the golf course which requires us to play a shot from the opposite side (e.g.. if you are a right hander you need to play the shot left handed). Now I agree that the game is hard enough to play conventionally, let alone turn the club around the opposite way. However for some fun and to balance your body, flip the club around as shown in picture 1. And play some shots the opposite way. Doing this will help you when your ball is up against a tree, also it will help you understand what a beginner feels like when they first take up the game.

Equipment Review - Srixon’s Revolutionary New Clubs Featuring The WS System.

Srixon Z-TI Driver - Feel The Power

The flagship of the new Srixon club range is the Z-TI Titanium Driver. Visually, the clubs are spectacular, with bright burnished finish, red and black graphics, and the distinctive metallic and red inserts that make up the WS System (Weight Optimisation plus Shock Absorption). At 460cc, the Z-TI has a powerful presence too, what you can’t see, but will certainly appreciate on the course, is the ultra-thin construction that produces high launch angles, low spin and an incredibly powerful trajectory.

The crown of the Z-TI is just 0.5mm thick – less than any other premium club on the market. What Srixon term the Impact Power Face varies from 2.35mm at the periphery to 3.25mm in the centre. This increases repulsion around the face and makes for high-speed launch, decreasing distance loss from off-centre hits and adding stability.

The Z-TI is fitted with the proprietary SV-3006 Fujikura Shaft, developed especially for Srixon. Designed with increased bending flexibility at the top again give’s greater stability and increased distance. Controlled tests have shown that the Z-TI carries an average of 8.3 metres further than the Ping G5 and surpasses even Srixon’s own W-506 is distance, with greatly increased accuracy.

Srixon I-601 Irons - Higher Launch, Longer Distance

The new Srixon I-601 irons share the family good looks with the Z-TI, with sophisticated graphics and the standout WS System clearly visible. The clubs have been designed to maximise the effects of the low centre of gravity created by the system; lifting the ball easily through the balance factors and the undercut wide sole. Because the WS System greatly assists in maintaining perfectly square impact, regardless of club length, accuracy is maximised, together with a unique dampened feeling.

As on the Z-TI, the tungsten weighting shifts from the toe on the longer irons to the centre on 5-7 and the heel on 8-PW. The head design features a special pocket cavity and the Impact Power Face technology also used in the Z-TI. It produces quicker acceleration of the ball, less spin and hence, increased distance. Using a #5 I-601, tests produced consistent shots of 174.4 metres – 8.3 metres more than the Ping G5. The 1-601 range is available with either the SV-3007 Carbon Shaft or the NS 950GH Steel Shaft.

A Total Family

Completing the new Srixon club line-up are the M-Steel Metal Woods and the AD Hybrids. Across the M-Steel range, great attention has been paid to producing a club with a sweet, vibration-free feel – a combination of the Impact Power Face and the WS System’s impact-absorbing materials. The Tungsten Nickel weighting in the heel of the M-Steel gets the ball into the air quicker, with a more stabilized flight pattern and increased forgiveness in off-centre hits. The M-Steel has a far larger sweet spot than the Srixon W-403AD and comes standard with a SV-3008 Carbon Shaft which has been specially designed for fairway woods. The M-Steel 3-wood carried an average of 198.5 metres under test – 4.6 metres more than the Ping G5.

The new Srixon AD Hybrid utility clubs also feature a greatly enlarged ‘sweet spot’ area, producing greater accuracy from difficult lies. The Impact Power Face, varying from 2.1mm to 2.6mm wall thickness increases stability in flight, while the special impact-absorbing jelly inside the head cavity produces an exceptionally soft feel at impact. Both steel and carbon shafts are available.
